Traveling Full Time in a RV
Dr. Dave Oester

Visitors to our web site often tell us that they would like to travel like us when they retire. We are not retired and we travel. The reason we are able to travel and live in a RV is because this is something we wanted to do for a long time. We avoided debt and were frugal with the royalties we earn as writers. We are financially independent and we have no debts. We do not have huge mortgage payments, tons of credit card payments because we live within our means and save money every chance we get.

We have traded the first and second mortgages, the stack of credit cards, and the daily drudge and grind of a high paying job that keeps you afloat from month to month because of the high overhead required to sustain your lifestyle filled with stress, anxiety, pressures, and financial tensions. This is known as the rat race.

As full time RVers, we have more vacations and no stress, anxiety or pressures. We do not have to worry if the economy goes sour because we do not link our income to a company that may downsize or take your retirement funds to stay afloat.

We have no lease payments on two or three vehicles and all of the big boy toys that so many accumulate. In other words, we live within our means and manage the funds we have and plan for our purchases by paying cash for them. If we cannot afford it, we do not buy it. Unlike so many today who must have all of the toys offered by television ads.

We love traveling and seeing new places. We love having a new backyard whenever the old one gets boring. We are not stuck in one location, but we get to see this great land. It took us ten years of preparation to be able to go on the road full time.

We did not start out with a huge RV coach with a huge mortgage and even bigger insurance payments, but instead we started out much smaller and have saved money along the way, not spent it on loan and insurance payments. We do not compete with the Jones across the street; we do not need a bigger home, more toys, or newer cars.

To travel full time, one must be willing to learn to live within their income and put money aside each month for the time when this is possible. Most people live month to month and if their employment terminates because their company downsized then their lifestyle crumbles down around them. They end up losing their homes and forced into bankruptcies.

We recommend that those who seek this lifestyle become financial independent by eliminating their debs, save money, and live within your means, and prepare for the time when you can travel.
